We’ve likely all heard the expression, “Can’t see the forest for the trees.” At FlexJobs, our goal is to help job seekers see both the forest and the trees. We want people to understand the big picture of work flexibility but also to understand how to find jobs they are qualified for and interested in—as quickly and efficiently as possible.
FlexJobs’ advanced search is a great tool to help job seekers sort through thousands of open jobs in a small amount of time. With nearly 30,000 jobs listed in the FlexJobs database in over 50 career categories, being able to narrow down results is a necessary time-saver. Check out our tips below for optimizing your job search by taking advantage of the advanced search options.
Advanced Search Options Tips
The advanced search options allow you to choose several search criteria at the same time, but don’t get too specific too quickly! It’s best to start more generally with just the required fields in your search rather than the “nice to have” options. Then you can fine-tune your search. But if you use every filter option in the advanced job search right off the bat, you’ll likely end up excluding jobs that could have been a good fit.
A good rule of thumb is to start by selecting a category, remote work level, and location. This search will give you a broad idea of the types of jobs available in your field and location. Once you complete a search, you can save it by clicking on the blue “Save Search” button and naming your search. Then, you can access this saved search in your member job search activity section.
Filters You Can Use to Target Jobs
You’ll find an “Advanced Search” icon located on the right side at the top of most pages on FlexJobs, next to the “Search by job title, keyword, etc.” search box (it’s the magnifying glass). When you click on it, you can see a variety of fields to either pinpoint or broaden your search. Here’s how each of the fields work to refine your job search.
Keywords
You can utilize this search if you are searching for a specific term commonly used in your field or for general job searching. The system will search the exact term if you check the “Exact phrase” box.
Exclude Words
You’ll be able to filter positions without certain keywords or terms by entering them into this field.
U.S. Location
This area will allow you to select the state you live in. Search by city, state, or zip code, and you will receive both national and local positions open in that area.
Underneath this field, you’ll find a checkbox “Open to candidates anywhere in the U.S.” Check it to include jobs open to candidates living in any state. If you fill in the city/state/zip code field, you’ll be shown jobs specific to that location and jobs open to candidates nationwide.
International
If you are looking for positions outside of the United States, you can search for positions within your country by utilizing the drop-down list of countries. You can also choose “Anywhere” to find positions that can be done from anywhere in the world.
The “International” filter also has an “Open to candidates” check box, but this will include or exclude positions that are open to candidates worldwide. Use it the same way you would for the U.S. Locations option.
Job Types
Use this field to filter for freelance, employee, or temporary jobs.
Work Schedule
This field will allow you to select part-time, full-time, alternative schedule (i.e., nights and/or weekends), or other flexible schedule arrangements.
Categories
This is the fastest and easiest way to search for jobs on FlexJobs. Our researchers place every job they find into specific categories, which enables you to see more positions that might be a good fit, even if they aren’t associated with a keyword-specific search.
Remote Work Level
This field lets you choose from 100% remote work, partial remote work, option for remote work, or no remote work.
Career Level
You can filter your job results based on the level of job you’re interested in. From entry-level to senior-level manager, this search function will give you results that reflect your experience.
Education Level
Here you can filter job results based on the required level of education. Education levels include no requirements, Associates Degree, Bachelor’s/Undergraduate Degree, Master’s Degree, and Doctorate Degree.
Travel
This section allows you to filter jobs by their travel requirements.
Featured & Award-Winning Employers
This category is a truly unique feature we offer on FlexJobs. Featured companies are employers that post jobs directly to the FlexJobs site and actively use FlexJobs in their hiring process. Award-winning employers have won recognition as an accomplished company, such as Fortune 500, Working Mother, and other accolades. If you’re interested in searching for opportunities with these distinguished companies, select the award or accolade to search for from the drop-down menu.
